As cycling becomes an increasingly popular participation sport, following the continued success of the Team Great Britain Olympians, London's cycling clubs continue to grow. As a cyclist there are a wide range of cycling clubs in London to choose from. Track, mountain, off road and BMX are some of major cycling disciplines you are offered. You could go cycling any time of the year and most of the clubs also allow you to hire a bicycle if you do not own one. We take a look at a few clubs who are always looking for enthusiastic new members.
Open to all abilities and ages, Islington Cycling Club can proudly boast of being the fastest growing club in the capital and are on course to be the largest in North London by the end of 2014. In less than a year the club has attracted an impressive 127 full members, a quarter of which are female, with over 50 further active users on their forum.
In keeping with being popular with those who are new to cycling, the club are actively seeking new members on an ongoing basis while meeting the envious task of keeping up with demand. The club runs three weekly rides on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, with other ad hoc rides organised through their forum. For newbies, the club runs confidence boosting introductory rides which help cyclists prepare for the challenges of the open road. Areas covered include learning to ride in group formations and the various hand signals required. A new ride for all the family is also in the pipeline. With over 200 members Willesden is West London’s largest cycling club and one of the biggest in the UK. The club prides itself on youth development and was recently granted Club Mark status for their commitment in this area.
Whether you’re a complete novice, looking to take part in 50-80 mile club runs, or have your eye on a spot in the club’s ‘Squadre Verde’ racing squad, a team of British Cycling qualified coaches are on hand to help members reach their potential.
Living in Surrey or South West London? Then the Kingston Wheelers could be the club for you. This medium sized club welcomes cyclists of all levels and they take pride in their welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
Club runs take place on a weekly basis, starting in Surbiton and there’s the chance to get to know other members away from the saddle at club night every Thursday. The club also has the added bonus of being based near the picturesque Richmond Park which is very popular with cyclists. Kingston Junior Cycling Club is an excellent starting point for youngsters as the club is solely dedicated to developing the stars of tomorrow. After being formed in 2011, the club now has nearly 200 cyclists on their books.
Crest Cycling Club is ideal for anyone living in East London, Essex and Hertfordshire. The club has a strong focus on the social side of cycling but still retains a competitive spirit.
As well as racing in various disciplines at local and national level, members also enjoy the tours run by the club every summer – including the Tour de France. Between Christmas and New Year the club runs its Crestmas (see what they’ve done there?) tour to the Cotswolds.
