Playfinder’s Top 5 Sport Films

Hearing the Government’s decision to close all pubs, theatres, gyms and leisure centres, advising everyone to only travel if necessary shows clear urgency from the Government and National Health Services in taking the next steps to slow down the rapid spread of COVID-19.

This means that training and match fixtures around the country have been postponed and many sports enthusiasts are now either working from home or self-isolating.

In light of this, Playfinder put together a list of our Top 5 recommended Sports films for you to enjoy at home to keep you entertained and give you that sporting fix that we are all missing at the moment!

So let’s kick off..

5) Invictus (2009)    IMDb Rating: 7.3

This infamous biopic follows the recently elected South African president, Nelson Mandela forge a great friendship with Springboks rugby captain Francois Pienaar. Just months after the end of Apartheid, the South-African rugby team embark on the journey to the World Cup final while Mandela uses the sport to unite the nation after realising the continued racial and economic divide within South Africa.

4) Rush (2013) IMDb Rating: 8.1

One for the petrolheads, this one. The historical biopic tells the story of arguably Formula 1’s fiercest rivalry. Legends of the sport; Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) battle head to head to win motorsport’s most famous crown. A modern classic that demonstrates the blood, sweat and tears it takes to get to the top of the podium.

3) Field Of Dreams (1989) IMDb Rating: 7.5

“If you build it, he will come”. Get the tissues at the ready, this one’s a tear-jerker. Kevin Costner plays countryside farmer Ray Kinsella, who begins to hear voices of the late Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 Chicago White Sox, infamous for throwing the World Series final game in one of the first match-fixing scandals of the twentieth century. Kinsella makes it mission to help to the ghosts of the White Sox play one last game for redemption.

2) Remember The Titans (2000) IMDb Rating: 7.8

Just missing out on our top spot, this biographical epic is based on the true story of T.C Williams High School’s American football team. The introduction of the new coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) causes tension in the first season since the school’s racial integration. The team’s success helps break down racially barriers within the school and the wider community.

1) Rocky (1976) IMDb Rating: 8.1

Let’s be honest, a list of the greatest sporting films cannot be complete without the ultimate classic itself! This heart-thumping and fist-pumping action-packed epic follows the small-time amateur boxer Rocky Balboa as he given the chance the harness his inner eye of the tiger on a journey to the world heavyweight championship fight.
