Andy Murray vs Novak Djokovic (2012)

7 years into his professional career, Britain’s Andy Murray was yet to win his first Grand Slam title. Right off the back of winning Olympic gold at London 2012, it was fifth time the charm for Murray in Grand Slam finals, beating Novak Djokovic in five sets.

After a strong start, Murray squandered his two-set lead but ultimately stormed the fifth set 6-2 to claim victory.

John McEnroe vs Bjorn Borg (1980)

One of the most iconic sporting rivalries of all time. Just 3 months after their notorious Wimbledon final, McEnroe and Borg clashed again, this time on US soil.

McEnroe had lost to the serial Wimbledon winner earlier in the summer, but after a 5 set slog, it was the American who won this battle on home turf.

Victoria Azarenka vs Serena Williams (2012)

Serena Williams is pretty well established as the best female tennis player of the Open Era, winning 23 Grand Slams along the way, but there once was a time where she wasn’t world number one. Enter Victoria Azarenka.

Fresh off of her first grand slam win in 2 years, Serena was fighting her way back to the summit, and managed to fend off Azarenka to win in the deciding set. She went on to claim the US Open 3 times back-to-back and 7 times in total to date.

Steffi Graf vs Monica Seles (1995)

The backstory to this final is dramatic to say the least. Monica Seles was competing in only her 2nd tournament for two and a half years, having been stabbed by a Steffi Graf fan in 1993. Additionally, Graf’s father was jailed for failing to pay tax on her earnings, so tension was high going into this battle.

A close first set saw Graf win on a tie-break. Seles then stormed the second 6-0, but it was ultimately the German who prevailed. Graf later hailed this final as the best win of her career.
