The last phase of the 2018/19 Champions League has begun and it’s hard not to anticipate what is to come after an action-packed season so far. The group stages saw many great goals however just to recap a few here are the top 5 Champions League goal scorers.
In first place is Poland & Bayern Munich’s world class striker, Lewandowski, leading with 8 goals and the only player to have scored four goals in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League!
With this being one of many of his claims to fame it’s hard to fault him on his work ethic and ambition. Poland & Bayern Munich have found their new successor after the likes of Kazimierz Deyna and many others before him.
2. Lionel Messi
Up next is Barcelona’s finest, Lionel Messi, the first scorer in Barcelona’s Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven. There was no doubt that Messi would make the top 5, he’s currently sat at second on the all-time top scorers, having already scored 6 goals this season.
Capello has said of Messi ” Messi is not a footballer he is a genius and the only genius in world football”.
3. Edin Dzeko
The “Bosnian diamond” strikes again and with a shot rate of 3.8, this game-changing striker for Roma gets 3rd place. Dzeko caused havoc against Viktoria Plzen netting a perfect hat-trick. At 5 goals this season, and 72% of shots on target, he’s hot on Lewandowski and Messi’s heels.
A quote from Luciano Spalletti, Roma coach – “If a coach could make a striker, I’d make one like Dzeko. He’s the perfect prototype: strong, tall, fast for his height, combative, aggressive and has good technique.”
Next up is Brazil’s most prolific player, Neymar, who became Brazil’s highest scoring Champion’s League player ever with 31 goals, a record previously held by Kaka. So far in this year’s tournament, he has 5 goals and 2 assists to his name.
He’ll have to work hard if he’s to add to his Champions League goal tally as he’s been sidelined with injury faces missing PSG’s second leg fixture against Manchester United next month.
5. Andrej Kramaric
Although Hoffenheim did not make it out of the group stages, Kramaric truly deserves the recognition for his consistent performances. Having scored 5 goals with 1 assist, including two in Hoffenheim’s match against Lyon, there is definitely more to come from Kramaric.
That’s a wrap for now and a lot could change between now and the final in May. If you fancy trying to add some goals to your season tally, find and book your local football pitch at MyLocalPitch.
