As the 2014 World Cup comes to a close, Playfinder.com takes a look at some of the most iconic moments of the tournament in Brazil. Here are some of our favourites;

1. Luis Suarez bite-gate incident

Luis Suarez never ceases to shy away from media attention. Evidently Suarez didn’t have time to eat before the game after he fancied a nibble on the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini- obviously a big fan of Italian foods! Before admitting the bite and apologising, Suarez apparently “lost his balance” making his body “unstable and falling on top of his opponent”. Not quite sure we believed that one Luis, but nice try.

2. R.I.P Neymar Jr.

Before Brazil’s battering from the Germans (1-7!), Captain David Luiz and Julio Cesar paid tribute to Neymar before the game, lifting his shirt in the air during the Brazilian national anthem. Unfortunately, Neymar suffered a tragic injury in the previous game. May he rest in peace.

3. Goal of the tournament

James Rodriguez was no doubt one of the best players of the 2014 World Cup. The Columbian No. 10 holds the golden boot of the tournament and produced some world class finishes. Our favourite was his volley against Uruguay in which he sweetly took the ball out of the air on his chest outside of the penalty box. In the famous words of Andy Gray (cue Scottish accent), “take a bow son”.

4. Does anyone have a chair for Mathieu Valbuena?

French player Mathieu Valbuena wasn’t quite able to get a good photo shot to send home to his parents before their game against Germany thanks to the 6 ft tall mascot. He spent the whole national anthem on his tip-toes after Paul Pogba swapped his mascot for Valbuena’s.

5. Caution: Slippery Surface

Germany’s Thomas Muller took a tumble during their supposed “training ground routine”. The groundsman forgot to place a sign stating how he had recently mopped the floor. There are reports Muller is sueing the groundsman after health and safety measured were not carried out effectively. Don’t worry Tommy mate, nobody noticed the slip up.

6. England Physio ruled out of the World Cup

On the 14th June, England’s tragic World Cup campaign commenced, with a 2-1 defeat against the Italians. To add insult to ‘injury’ England’s physio, Gary Lewin, was ironically taken to hospital with a dislocated ankle, suffered during the celebrations of Daniel Sturridge’s goal. Rumour has it that he slipped in a divot…Gary you had one job!

7. Steady on Sabella

The quarter-final match between Argentina and Belgium was in truth fairly uneventful, with more entertaining action coming from the side lines thanks to Argentinian coach Alejandro Sabella. Almost falling backwards after seeing his striker, Gonzalo Higuin hit the post, the internet have had a field day with Sabella memes! Maybe he was singing to Fat Joe’s classic, “Lean back” during the game. Oh, by the way Argentina won the game 1-0.

8. Superman or a salmon out of water?

In a 5-1 rout over defending Champions Spain, Netherlands striker, Robin Van Persie escaped Spanish defender Sergio and Ramos and scored an incredible diving header (looking like Superman) from just inside the penalty box. The ball looped helplessly over Spainish goalkeeper, Iker Casillas. The goal was so good, that Arsene Wenger even gave it a go at the beach!

USA appoint a new Secretary of Defense

During USA’s heartbreaking defeat against Belgium, Tim Howard made the most saves (15) in one game in World Cup history. His performance deemed him a phone call from US President Barack Obama and there are talks for him to take over as the new Secretary of Defense. Throughout the game Tim was trending on twitter with the title #ThingsTimHowardCanSave. Unfortunately he wasn’t quite able to stop Sabella from slipping.

10. Klose somersaults to the top

To rub it in for the Brazilians, German’s Miroslav Klose has become the all-time World Cup goalscorer with 16 goals, overtaking Brazil legend Ronaldo (not Cristiano, the fat one…yeah him). Klose scored his first World Cup goal during an 8-0 win over Saudi Arabia in 2002 and his record breaking sixteen came in the 7-1 demolition over Brazil. Funnily enough all of his goals have come from inside the penalty box.
