London 2012 Olympics gave us some of the best sporting moments in a long time. From Usain Bolt to Mo Farah to Jessica Ennis-Hill – check out the greatest moments from London 2012!
London 2012 Greatest Moments

1. Mo Farah wins 2 Gold Medals

After tough recent races, Mo travelled to Kenya for really tough training sessions in high altitude to make sure this will not continue at London 2012. This seemed to do the trick – winning gold at the European Indoor Championships and also getting the British record for 10000 metres.

After more training and a lot more medals the 2012 Olympic Games was near.

With an increased reputation, this meant expectations also increased for Mo Farah. The pressure did not take it’s toll – Mo delivered in style and won gold in 10,000 metres. He then followed this up with gold in the 5000 metres.

His facial expression after crossing the line summed up the feelings of the nation. Farah celebrated by doing the “Mobot”, which became one of many iconic moments in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

2. Jessica Ennis-Hill

Jessica Ennis-Hill has won 7 gold medals in her glittering career. One of these came at the World Championships in Berlin – but the most memorable is, of course, at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Jessica got an overall score of 6,955 points beating silver medallist Lilli Schwarzkopf by 306 points. She achieved three personal bests in 100 metres hurdles (12.54 secs), 200 metres (22.83 secs) and javelin (47.49m). Her 100 metres hurdles time was the new British record and it was also the fastest time that had been run in a heptathlon. Quite phenomenal.

 3.The Brownlee Brothers

In 2011, Alistair Brownlee went on to win five gold medals in competitions such as European Triathlon Championships and also ITU Triathlon World Championships. His brother Jonathon Brownlee, during the 2010 and 2011 season, won four gold medals in the ITU World Junior Championships.

The London 2012 Olympic Games was successful for Alistair and Jonathon as they both received a medal in the triathlon. The triathlon event was held in Hyde Park, Central London, and consisted of 1.5 kilometres of swimming, 43 kilometres of cycling and 10 kilometres of running.

Alistair earned a gold medal for Great Britain and despite receiving a 15-second penalty Jonathon secured a bronze medal.

4.Greg Rutherford

Greg represented Great Britain in 2012 Olympics in long jump and had a few successful years running up to 2012. In 2010, at the Commonwealth Games, he won a silver medal with a jump of 8.22 metres. Notably in 2011, he achieved his personal best at the Eugene Diamond League with 8.32 metres. This created great promise coming into 2012.

The 2012 Olympics came and Greg Rutherford won a gold medal with a jump of 8.31 metres. This was the shortest winning jump since 1972 but it was still 15 cm longer than the second-placed athlete Mitchell Watt.

Super Saturday

During the London 2012 Olympic Games, the 4th August was a very special day for British fans. That day, three of our athletes achieved a gold medal in the space of an hour. Jessica Ennis-Hill winning a gold in the heptathlon, Greg Rutherford winning a gold in long jump, and Mo Farah winning a gold in the 10000 metres. This day is now know as Super Saturday.
