Best Sporting Moments of 2017

2017 was rich with great sporting moments, from England winning both the Under-20s and Under-17s World Cup for the first time, to a return to the top for the tennis greats of the past decade.

Here are Playfinder’s favourite sporting moments of 2017.

Serena Williams Wins Australian Open

Serena Williams has been the dominate force in Women’s tennis for two decades, but her win in the first all-Williams Grand Slam final since 2009 took her Grand Slam total to 23, making her the most successful tennis player in the Open-era.

Her win was made even more impressive when she later revealed that she was pregnant at the time!

England Win 2nd Consecutive Six Nations

In the rugby world, it doesn’t get much bigger than the Six Nations.

England overcame France, Wales, Italy and Scotland on their way to a 2nd consecutive Six Nations title. However, they were stopped from completing the Grand Slam by Ireland in the final match of the tournament.

Sergio Garcia Wins the Masters

It’s been a long time coming for Sergio Garcia, but the fan-favourite finally won the most prestigious tournament in golf, and donned the green jacket for the first time.

Anthony Joshua knocks out Wladimir Klitschko

The biggest boxing match of the year certainly lived up the billing. Both players hit the floor, but it was Joshua who came out on top, knocking out Klitschko in the 11th round.

Chelsea win the Premier League

After a fall from grace the previous season, Chelsea fought off their rivals to win a 5th Premier League title in Antonio Conte’s debut season in charge.

Nadal wins ‘La Decima’

The King of Clay was back, winning a record 10th French Open title. Nadal later added the US Open to his 2017 haul and ended the year as world number 1, nine years after his first reign at the top.

England’s Under-17s and Under-20s win World Cup

You wait 60 years for a World Cup and two come at once. England’s youth teams proved themselves at the highest level, bringing home the Under-17s and Under-20s World Cups, while the Under-19s won the Euros.

They’ve got a bright future ahead…

Federer wins 8th Wimbledon Title

Nadal may have finished the year as number 1, but Federer also proved himself to still be a force to be reckoned with. He added an 8th Wimbledon title to the Australian Open from the top the year, extending his Grand Slam total to 19.

Real Madrid Win Back-to-Back European Titles

Real Madrid have become a seemingly unstoppable force in Europe, winning their third final in 4 years and becoming the first team to win consecutive European titles in the Champion’s League era.

They beat Juventus comprehensively 4-1, with Ronaldo scoring two in a man of the match performance.
